2008_02_02_009 With the chill upon us, we tend to open and peruse our seed catalogs dreaming of spring days to come.  Many of us have already ordered seeds and others are already starting plants in their basement.  This is what we do in the Northeast to keep us going during the off season.  Thankfully, there are so many great places to buy seeds that it is often hard to narrow down the list.  I try and buy as much as I can from New England and the Northeast but there are always goodies I need that don’t fit that criteria.

So here is my list of favorite sites and catalogs so you can start ordering!

Burpee – One of the oldest seed companies in the Northeast, Burpee began in 1876 and is still a family run business.  It is run out of the Philadelphia area and has a large selection of annuals, perennials, vegetables and herbs.

The Cook’s Garden – Great catalog for gourmet vegetables. Located in Pennsylvania.

Fedco Seeds – This is the Maine cooperative that also has an affordable tree selection.

Harris Seeds – Based in Rochester, NY, this company has been selling vegetable and flower seeds since 1879.

High Mowing Seeds – This seed company began in 1996 as a hobby and has grown into a thriving business.  Tom Stearns runs this small, family owned, certified organic seed company from Northern Vermont – the only one on the east coast.  The folks are very helpful and knowledgeable and appreciate our business.

Jelitto Perennial Seeds – This is the best perennial seed catalog I have found.  It is a German company but they have an office in the US so seeds are available and they have very unusual plants.  The germination information is a bit intimidating but it is always worth a try.

Johnny’s Selected Seeds- This company is located in Maine and was established in 1973.  They have a great selection of seeds for vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Seed Savers Exchange – This is a nonprofit out of Iowa that saves and sells heirloom seeds.

Seeds of Change – Located in New Mexico, this company is well known for its choice of organic seeds.

Thomson & Morgan – one of the oldest UK seed companies around with a great selection of flower seeds.
